About the Gallery

01 Gallery is a post contemporary art gallery located in downtown Los Angeles at the Barker Block.  The Barker Block is a new condominium project built by the Kor Group.   The Kor Group is a privately held international real estate investment firm comprised of integrated development, design and construction, real estate sales and marketing, and hotel management divisions. Its curatorial approach to creative lifestyle experiences and passion for authentic, world-class visionary design has set the company apart since its inception in 1989.  The 01 Gallery’s presence in the Barker Block turned it into a destination in an otherwise unknown area, attracting new clientel from all over the city.

The original 01 Gallery was founded in 1980 in Hollywood.  The gallery is known for its contributions to the lowbrow art movement, as it frequently exhibited pieces with heavy graffiti and street art influences. After closing the famous Melrose address and moving to several different locations the gallery closed.  In April of 2007 under new management The 01 Gallery was re-launched downtown.

The gallery’s name derives from a conceptual understanding of the creative process. As Kyle Lina explains, “Zero is when there’s nothing–one when there’s something. The space between the zero and the one is the creative act”.

Over the course of 01 Gallery’s history, it has been frequented by Los Angeles residents such as Anthony Kiedis, Raymond Pettibon, John Doe, David Lee Roth, Tomata Du Plenty, Tequila Mockingbird and John Belushi. This diverse clientele has lead 01 Gallery to be thought of as analogous to Andy Warhol’s Factory. “Its eccentric mix of artists and patrons made it [Los Angeles'] answer to the Factory, though the creations were more “lowbrow” than pop.”.

The gallery has recently exhibited works by Lisa Adams, Anthony Ausgang, Chaz Bojorquez, Gregory Bojorquez, Sam Fuchs, Adam Grey, Michael Knowlton, Augustine Kofe, Mear One, Retna, Saber and Robert Williams.

Notable past curators include Walter Hopps and Carlo McCormick.
